Description
Tears of the Dancer is a literary fictional work intended for adolescents, young adults and those looking to further enrich their knowledge of the cultural diversity of traditional Igbo society. It is a 90,000-word story set about the time of the entrance of the British colonialists to the area around the lower Niger.
The story centres around Ogene, a raffish poor man of 28 whom the villagers ridicule as a ne'er-do-well, despite being a highly talented dancer. It begins with a flashback introducing Amaechi, the pine wine tapper, who played a vital role in Ogene's early life. Amaechi committed suicide because of depression following his wife's open revelation of his impotence.
Much later, Ogene's path crosses that of Obioma, a handsome boy of 14 whose father is one of the illustrious sons of Umumbaa. Obioma has a free spirit that refrains from bending to the unsophisticated ways of the villagers. He sees nothing but greatness in Ogene. Because of Ogene, he decides to become a dancer, but his father, Egwuatu, a fierce-looking, ill-tempered hunter, is in no position to countenance such egregious departure from the village norms. In Umumbaa, dancing is viewed as a waste of time. This becomes a flashpoint of frequent violent altercations in Egwuatu's family.
Meanwhile, Ugbala, a young lady of 22, is infatuated with Obioma. The story takes a dramatic turn when Obioma turns down Ugbala's brash romantic overtures and Ugbala decides to take the path of vengeance. She concocts a false rumour about having observed Ogene and Obioma engage in homosexuality in the forest under the pretext of going for their dancing lessons.
